Football Boots for 2015

Posted by The Shadow on January 12, 2015 (0 Comments)

We all know the feeling of digging out that footy bag that's been sitting in a cupboard since September fermenting in it's own putrid smell waiting for you to open it up and unleash hell on your poor nostrils. We all go through the same routine every year, but that smell of grass, mud, B.O. and deep heat floors us every time. But in it's own crazy little way, it's exciting because footy season is just around the corner.

Many clubs from soccer to AFL to rugby begin their preseason this week, or in the very near future for the 2015 campaign. Some were even crazy enough to start before Christmas! I've always had the mentality that there is only so much tread on these tyres, so I've tended to be a late comer to preseason shenanigans of hill sprints, time trials, beep tests accompanied by the never ending promise/dangling carrot of 'ball work' from the coach.

So when that time of ball work does come around, you better hope your football boots are still in good shape from the previous year, otherwise it's time to go shopping.

I know we're a footy boot site, but we do recommend owning 2 pairs of boots to keep in your bag throughout the season.

If you fancy the high end boots like the Nike Mercurial Vapors or the adidas F50s, then you really don't want to put those boots on when training conditions are wet and muddy. You're better off putting on those cheaper entry-level boots like the Nike Mercurial Victorys or adidas F10s as poor conditions will chew through your boots.

Here are some other great reasons for having 2 pairs of boots:

- Free shipping if you buy 2 or more pairs
- Backup pair in case you have a blow out mid game/training.
- Dry boots for your next training/game while your other pair dries out naturally. Do NOT use a hair dryer or other artificial heat source including a heater to dry your boots. This will reduce the longevity of your boots significantly. Stuff your boots with newspaper or paper towels to draw the moisture out, and allow them to dry naturally.
-  Spare pair for that nuffy teammate who has a blowout or forgets their boots at home. There's always one in every team.

Now on to the new release boots for 2015:

MyFootyBoots Favourite Pick:

Just a great all round boot for all football codes, although the preference here is soccer due to the 3D Pass pad which helps with passing.

How Often Should You Be Replacing Your Running Shoes

Posted by Kayli Barth on April 11, 2014 (0 Comments)
Whether you're training for a half-marathon, a 10k, or you're just a casual runner, your shoes are the most important piece of equipment you have. Your running shoes were designed to absorb the impact of your foot hitting the pavement (or trail, or treadmill) and save you from injury. But like all sports equipment, your shoes have an expiry date which if ignored can result in discomfort or injury.

Unfortunately the expiry date isn't written on your shoes anywhere. So how do you know when it's time to replace your kicks? The answer is: it depends.

Many people say you should replace your running shoes every 4-6 months or 700-1100 kms. Where you might fall in that range depends on your size, training schedule, and running style. If you are small or a very experienced runner that is lighter on their feet, you might be near the higher end of the range. If you're larger or have a heavier foot when you run, you would likely go through shoes faster.

Beyond the numbers, there are a few ways to tell if your shoes need replacing:
  • Try the press test - press your finger or thumb into the midsole of your shoe. If it feels hard and unforgiving it is broken down and no longer absorbing the impact on your foot.
  • Look for signs of wear in the outsoles - there are a couple signs from the outsole that your shoes are starting to breakdown. If you notice a lot of creasing or if the sole of your shoe looks as bald as an old tire, it's time to replace it.
  • Pay attention to your body - if you have some new nagging aches and pains in your feet, ankles, shins, or knees, it could very well be your body's way of telling you that your shoes are past their prime.
No matter what level of a runner you are, replacing your shoes regularly will keep you comfortable and injury free. You may even find yourself hitting new PBs with a fresh pair of kicks.

Benefits of running

Benefits of running

Other than walking, running is one of the most basic and convenient forms of exercising that we can participate in. It can be done both indoors and outdoors, on grass or roads, and on treadmills or the sands of your favorite beach. And the great thing about running is that it has many benefits for your overall health.

Now, the difference between jogging or walking and running, is the level of intensity. It's in this higher level of intensity that we receive the most benefits.

Improves Immune System

One of the major benefits of running is that it helps to improve your immune system by aiding in flushing out various bacteria and/or fighting off viral infections[1]. Running can help to increase the body's core temperature, which may help to fight off bacteria. Additionally, running slows down the release of stress hormones which can decrease the chance of getting sick.

Prevents Diseases

In addition to improving your immune system, running can also help to prevent various serious ailments or diseases. The following is a list of diseases/ailments that running can help to prevent[2]:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Various forms of cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Lose Weight

Running is a great weight to manage your weight. Depending on what your goals are, running can help you lose excessive weight, burn off more calories, lose body fat and generally help you to tone up. Various forms of running, like high intensity interval training (HIIT), can have a greater impact on weight loss and caloric expenditure.

Improve Moods

Running can have a tremendous impact on your moods or emotions. There are various studies that have linked exercising/running to alleviating or improving the symptoms of depression[3]. This is due to the body releasing "feel-good" chemicals during running. Additionally, it can help to prevent various chemicals that may be released which increase the feelings of sadness or lethargy.

Running also helps to improve or prevent stress. You can take your mind off of the things that stress you out while you are running. In fact, you can feel like a new person as you run off all of the stress and anxieties in your life.

Running will boost your self-confidence as you are getting into better shape. This could be an area that's causing your stress or depression.

Whether it's stress, depression or a similar mental/emotional struggle, running can help you to cope with things in a healthy way.

Choose the Right Shoes

Before you embark on a running program, you must first choose the right shoes for you. These shoes should support your feet and ankles, and ensure that you feel comfort while running. Running shoes are highly recommended because they are designed to best fit and aid individuals who run on a regular basis.
